Sunday May 5th, 2013
Cici, do you remember when you were in the 6th grade and we all helped you make a diorama of the African Savannah?  Well, I am there!  I would be able to give you so much more information now than I could then.  It is so beautiful, the different grasses, trees and the birds and animals.  Today we are up early,
5:30am and in Kruger National Park by 6am.  These early hours are killing me.  The jeep is open and windy and  cold, but we don't care. We put on layers of coats. Later it rains a bit and we even get out the rain coats. We are out for game.  The day is very productive.  We first encounter giraffe. They are such beautiful and graceful animals and soooo big.  They are interspersed with zebra.  The zebra are brown and white, not black.  Horses in striped pajamas, right Lucy!  We are very fortunate because they are very close to the road, in fact, all of the animals that we see today are close to us.  That doesn't happen very often.  We see impalas always.  Suddenly, our driver Godfrey takes off speeding.  He has been informed that a pair of lions have been sighted.  We race for 15 minutes but it pays off.  There in the midst of a myriad of stopped vehicles,  is a pair of honeymooning lions, and we all watch like a bunch of voyeurs.  This couple is so regal.  They walk along the road and so close to all of us we imagine they are tame. Ha.  In the afternoon the group goes out again and some of them are treated to the sighting of a pair of mating leopards.  This must be the mating season.  I did not go but Nila did and she will share her pictures with me. Tonight we have a buffet diner with our group.  We have all become quite friendly.  What a great day.
