I take a cab alone to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. It is dedicated to the cultivation and study of indigenous plants of SA. I take the golf cart tour of this huge park (528 hectares, 2.5 acres per hectare). Many of the plants that the guide points out have medicinal characteristics. One of the most interesting things in the garden is the Braille Trail. A rope encircles the small garden and a wood block on the rope tells the person to stop and read the Braille. Wow. I keep saying beautiful but it is so lovely. May in SA is fall but many of the flowers are still in bloom. This garden is huge. The last private owner was Cecil John Rhodes. He died in 1902 and left the land to the nation. The country Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) was named for him. He was very committed to encouraging young men to further their educations. When he died, he left a trust to continue helping young men with their educations. It is called the Rhodes Scholarship. I forgot my camera so this tour is for me alone. Back to the wharf for last minute shopping. We have a farewell dinner and tomorrow we leave for home. I hope you have enjoyed our trip to Africa.
